The Generic Smartphone

Now I have heard of many people saying they want a smartphone that has (insert demand), or (insert demand). Some people claim that certain devices are/are not smartphones because they have a little added buttons, or the screen is a bit too big (*cough Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3). But all jokes aside, I feel I should set an expectation. In this post, I will cover what I think should be/should not be in a smartphone, talk why I think that way, and how will it be practical in our everyday lives.

Let us start out with the essentials. A smartphone, or any other phone should have a display. If your cellphone/smartphone doesn’t have a screen or display of some sort….. Well, that’s no longer a smartphone(let alone cellphone). I personally think a smartphone should have a touch screen sized between 4″ to 6″. Reason being, if it were any bigger, your head will look very…….. small to put it in nice terms, you will also be struggling to take it out of your pockets (unless you use larger pockets), and not to mention the unwanted attention you might be pulling to yourself.

Say for example, you are at the airport waiting for a flight, then your mother calls you wishing you goodbye(and a long talk about eating vegetables), and you are there, talking and talking like your flight is non-existent. A nearby man (thief in disguise) casually walks past you, sneaking away with all your luggage and you are left there standing, rambling about how you are healthy enough. A long while after, you finally managed to break off the conversation and put down the phone. Only now you notice that everything is missing. Moral of the story; the bigger the phone, the more obvious it becomes that you are not paying much attention to your surroundings (the phone might block out your field of view… unlikely) and you will probably loose something of value. But don’t get me wrong, even smaller phones can be risky too.

battery

Now we go to the next big ticket: Battery life. A typical smartphone should be able to last the whole day (with average usage) without needing to find a wall plug. If a smartphone can’t last that long, you might consider investing in a power bank or find other alternatives. I would say your smartphone would have to last between 8 A.M. to 6 P.M., starting from full charge all the way to zero. Basically you would want a phone that would last your working hours/school hours (depending on circumstance). It is not a sin to carry around an ac adapter or a power bank(if you play games or browse the web all day), but if your phone can’t even last this timespan on mild use, something must be terribly wrong with your phone.

Next we go for the camera. Almost every smartphone has a 2 (or 1 rotational) camera(s). One for “self portraits” and the other for slightly more professional use. Usually the back camera is used for taking pictures at higher resolution for things people would want to take down, whether it would be for school or to posting it on social media, the back facing camera should be the better camera out of the pair. Either in camera quality or camera options(timelapse, slow-mo, panoramas). As for the camera facing you all the time, this camera should be the lesser of the two, reason being that the developers only have so much space to work with, and that not everyone wants to see your selfies being posted online(seriously, there are plenty of ways to boost your self esteem, please just don’t use selfies as one of them). In all due respect, that is usually how smartphone cameras are configured(with the exception of a few).apple-iphone-5-camera-lens

Moving on, there are your audio options (this is when things get a bit more personal). You have your speaker/mic you use when you call people, your speaker you use when you watch videos/play music, and finally your headphone jack. If you are a headphone user like me, the built in devices don’t really affect us, but if you like to move around light, the audio I/Os might be quite important to you. The most important part of the I/Os would be your media speaker. This speaker can be identified by being the loudest speaker in your phone, pumping out the most bass and treble you can get. If you work a lot with music/listen to a lot of music, you might be better off buying an external speaker. For your mic, the built-in mic on the side of the phone should be good enough to have your caller hear you clearly. I can’t really find a reason to standardize this, but what you should lookout for is your mic, and your media speaker. But every smartphone must have a 3.5mm audio jack due to many headsets having use that kind of input.

Then we have connectivity. When I talk about connectivity, I basically mean the means of wireless connection and I/Os. As most (and if not all) smartphones all use WiFi and Bluetooth, we can call them essentials due to the convenience it brings some of us. I always use my phone to browse the web, and sometimes use Bluetooth to pair up my phone to my wireless speakers when I’m at outings with friends. So it is safe to say a smartphone must have those 2 forms of connectivity. Progressing to I/Os, there are your 3 main contenders; Micro Usb, Lightning, and (getting quite common but somehow not related), wireless. We all know wireless charging has become a very recent technological advancement. Some 3rd party companies these days give us the option to have wireless charging on our phones such as fonesalesman, and it can be quite convenient to most of us, but I feel we should leave that aside for now. Now we have Apple’s exclusive; Lightning. It is nice to have apple incorporate the reversible charge/sync to their smartphones, but unfortunately, this isn’t gonna be our choice for our main I/O, due to the sad fact that this is only used by Apple smartphones. Finally, we have our Micro Usb. Micro Usb is extremely common in Android and Windows smartphones, in which we would have to give the clear charger of choice for our generic smartphone. Not to mention how easy it would be to loan a cable from a friend.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWifi & Bluetooth

Lastly, we have the gimmicks. What I mean by gimmicks are just features on the phone to justify the selling price. Gimmicks vary between flashlights(tho quite common these days) to waterproofing/dust proofing. The only thing you would really need on your smartphone would be a flashlight (no reason required). You could have your optional biometric scanning, but I know quite a number of people who never bothered to use it. I personally find biometric scanning very convenient. It saves me plenty of time in which I can reply messages to quickly, and its also easy to unlock my phone with 1 hand (fingerprint reading). Summing this up and keeping it simple, a generic smartphone must have a flashlight.

Conclusion. To end this topic, Let us go through everything we have talked about. A modern smartphone should have:
